Live donation
In terms of the German Organ Transplantation Foundation:Specific organs or parts of organs can be donated already during the lifetime. So, a healthy person with a good kidney function can donate a kidney, without impairments because of the absence of the organ. The remaining kidney compensates the loss. Also a part of the liver can be obtained for transplantation.
The legislator created the legal framework for live donation with the transplantation act. It will ensure, that it is done only on a voluntary basis and with a minimum medical risk to the donor. Live donation is only allowed between close relatives and personally closely connected persons.
The number of live donors has strikingly increased in recent years. Reason for this is the legal regulation by means of the law as well as the good international results. Also the lack of organ donors after death as well as the increasing need of transplantations favours the development of live donors.
