Sub-specialization
According to the Medical practitioner statistics of the German Medical Association:
A sub-specialization (German: "Schwerpunkt", literally: focus) is described as a further specialization within
the field, which is based on the specialist qualification.
That means a sub-specialization can only be acquired after completion of a specialist postgraduate qualification.
Until 1992 sub-specializations were named as "Teilgebiet" (sub-field). Some sub-specializations were transformed into
specialist titles. Therefore there is for example in internal medicine the sub-specialization "Angiology" and beside
the specialist title "internal medicine and angiology".
