Heroin
In terms of the annual narcotics report of the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation:Heroin, for a long time the most widely used hard drug in the Federal Republic of Germany, is obtained in a relatively simple chemical process from raw opium. Intermediate product of the production process is morphine base. The conversion ratio from raw opium to heroin is 10:1. Heroin is snuffed, smoked, inhaled, injected subcutaneously or intravenously. In advancing addiction the consumer usually passes to the intravenously injection because of the more intense effect. Heroin consumption can result in heaviest psychological and psysical addiction up to physical and mental degeneration. The drug has one of the most addictive potentials of all substances listed in the narcotics act ("Betäubungsmittel-Gesetz"). The psychological addiction is reflected in the irrestible desire to take the drug in order to achieve psychological satisfaction, or to avoid discomfort. The physical addiction can be seen in the habituation of the body to the drug and in painful physical withdrawal symptoms (like weight loss, chills, muscle cramps, pain in the limbs and so on). A long-term addiction is often accompanied by social pauperization. The most of the registered cases of narcotics deaths are connected directly or indirectly with the consumption of heroin.
