In terms of the Notifiable Infectious Diseases - data collection by Robert Koch Institute:Hepatitis C is an inflammation of the liver, that occurs in humans worldwide and is caused by the hepatitis C virus which is transmitted parenterally. Without a therapy the disease proceeds chronically in more than 70% of the cases. In chronical cases the infection can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cell carcinoma after decades. There is no vaccine against hepatitis C. Because of the mostly unknown infection time the identification of the transmission path is often difficult.
