Norwalk-like virus disease
In terms of the Notifiable Infectious Diseases - data collection by Robert Koch Institute:Norovirus belongs to the group of calici-viruses and was in former times referred to as Norwalk-like virus. It is spread worldwide and responsible for the bulk of non-bacterial cases of infectious gastroenteritis in children and adults. The disease was also given the name "winter vomiting disease" because of its characteristic symptomatics with projectile vomiting and because of its mostly seasonal onset in winter. Noroviruses are often the cause of outbreaks in homes of the elderly, hospitals and other community facilities. The main source of infection are, in addition to contaminated food, infected people, who can excrete the virus via faeces, but can also - for example via vomiting - transmit the virus via air.
