Domino liver transplantation

In terms of the German Organ Transplantation Foundation:
Domino liver transplantation
A special metabolic dysfunction of the liver (amyloidosis) can damage various organs (heart, gastro-intestinal tract as well as peripheral nervous system). Such a patient is a candidate for a liver transplantation and can also donate his liver. The patient needs a new liver, because the dysfunction already attacked other organs and he otherwise faces death. With the liver transplantation the defect is removed. His liver (with the enzyme defect) is otherwise functionally and anatomically fine. This liver can be transferred to another human, because the expectable organ affliction via the dysfunction is not expected before 20 to 30 years later. Therefore elderly patients are candidates for such a transfer, if they are, because of the existing lack of organs, acutely facing death.
