The infection with the world-wide spread parasite of the small intestine giardia lamblia can proceeded inconspicuously, but may also lead to long-lasting diarrhoea and upper abdomen afflictions recurring over years with fever and weight loss. The parasite is transmitted via faeces by direct contact, food or drinking water.
