In terms of the Notifiable Infectious Diseases - data collection by Robert Koch Institute:
The enteropathic haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) includes severe, under certain circumstances fatal complications, which can occur in cases of bacterial intestinal infections with entero haemorrhagic escherichia coli (EHEC). Less frequently they also occur in cases of infections with shigella or other bacteria. HUS is associated with the decay of red blood cells, clotting disorders and kidney failure. In thrombotic-thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) functional disorders of the brain, like seizures, are additionally observed.
