Percutaneous coronary intervention
The balloon dilatation and stent implantation (internationally known is the collective term PCI, i.e. percutaneous coronary intervention)
are particularly common revascularization methods. A catheter with a small balloon fixed at the end, is advanced to the coronary stenosis
by a guide wire. By filling the balloon, the stenosis is widened (dilated). With stents (small metal grids, that are unfurled within the
coronary vessel) narrowed segments of the vessels can be kept open permanently. In certain case constellations drug eluting stents (DES) can
reduce the probability of renewed intervention.
