Standardized incidence ratio (SIR)

In terms of the German Childhood Cancer Registry of the Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, University Medical Center Mainz:
For analyses of the regional distributions of the disease frequency in addition to age-standardized incidences also the so-called standardized incidence ratio (SIR) is used. It is calculated as the quotient of the observed and the expected number of cases. The expected numbers are calculated from the number of inhabitants in the individual age groups (under 1 year, 1 year to 4 years, 5 to 9 years, 10 to 14 years) in the survey region and the nationwide age-specific disease rates in the same period.
