Students/students in the 1st faculty-specific semester

In terms of the University statistics of the Federal Statistical Office:
Students are persons enrolled in a faculty, not including those on leave, members of study seminars and lecture visitors. Students in the 1st university semester (first enrolled) are those, who have registered in the considered semester for the first time at a university in Germany. Students in the 1st faculty-specific semester are students, who registered for the first time in a particular subject. Students in the 1st university semester are generally also in the 1st faculty-specific semester. Because a part of the students changes the subject during their course of studies, the number of students in the 1st faculty-specific semester is higher than the number of students in the 1st university semester. Information on the number of students in the 1st faculty-specific semester are needed e.g. for statements about the future specialist labour supply in the field of academics. While the students in the 1st semester are recorded in each semester, a survey of the number of students takes place only in the winter semester.
