Diseases caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex are referred to as tuberculosis. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex includes Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Variant M. africanum, M. bovis, M. microti and M. canett. The transmission of the pathogen usually takes place via air from human to human. For this reason, the early detection of infectious cases and the quickly initiated therapy which has to be administered consequently over at least 6 months to break infection chains are of particular importance. Untreated, the disease is characterized by a severe long lasting course, which is associated with unspecific symptoms like anorexia (weight loss), subfebrile temperatures, night sweats and cough. Depending on additionally affected organs other medical conditions can additionally occur.
