Pre- and post-inpatient treatment in hospitals

According to § 115a SGV, when hospital treatment is prescribed, a hospital can treat an insured person without accommodation and board in medically appropriate cases, to clarify the necessity of a full-time inpatient hospital treatment or to arrange the full-time inpatient hospital treatment (pre-inpatient treatment) or subsequent to a full-time inpatient hospital treatment to secure or stabilize the treatment success (post-inpatient treatment). The pre-inpatient treatment is limited to maximally three treatment days within five days before starting the inpatient treatment. The post-inpatient treatment may not exceed seven treatment days within a fortnight, in cases of organ transplantations according to § 9 of the transplantation law ("Transplantationsgesetz") within three months, upon completion of the inpatient hospital treatment. The period of a fortnight or three months can be extended in medically justified individual cases in agreement with the practitioner, who initialized the hospitalization.
