Chronic liver disease encompasses a multitude of unhealthy changes in the liver. 80% of cases result from excessive alcohol consumption. The second most common cause is chronic viral infection with its consequences, in particular hepatitis C. Around 2 to 3.2 million people (80% men) suffer from alcohol induced liver disease. The prevention of alcohol induced liver disease can be achieved using measures aimed at reducing alcohol abuse. The direct costs were estimated at approx. DM 1.9 billion in 1994.
