Journal of Health Monitoring

The Journal of Health Monitoring is an online journal published by the Robert Koch Institute. The new format within the portfolio of Federal Health Reporting is aimed at a broad (specialist) audience and focuses on important public health issues.

The journal offers scientific information on the health of the population in Germany. The analyses are mainly based on data of the health surveys conducted by the Robert Koch Institute. These analyses are presented in the form of focus articles and fact sheets which are linked by a common theme.

The Journal of Health Monitoring is published quarterly in German and English. All contributions to the journal are subject to peer review and can be downloaded free of charge from the website of the Robert Koch Institute.

Journal of Health Monitoring 2/2021:

June 2021 ISSUE 2

Diabetes surveillance in Germany: New results within the context of diabetes care and the COVID-19 pandemic

The first Focus article of the issue analyses the implementation and development over time of gestational diabetes mellitus screening participation and prevalence in Germany. The data basis is the external inpatient obstetrics quality assurance documentation, which covers all births in hospital.

As part of the research project 'Health and primary-care sentinel surveillance in reception- and accommodation-centres for asylum-seekers in Germany' (PriCare), a health-monitoring approach was developed for the secondary use of routine medical data from on-site outpatient clinics in reception centres.

The second article examines the prevalence of diabetes by age and sex and the frequency of secondary and concomitant diseases (obesity, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and depression) based on 2019 Germany-wide statutory health insurance claims data.

In addition, three Fact sheets report on self-assessed quality of care among adults with diagnosed diabetes, healthy life years among people with and without diabetes and the utilisation of outpatient medical services by people with diagnosed diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This issue also contains three Fact sheets with results from the study "KomPaS: survey on communication and patient-safety" which cover the following topics: Needs of the population in Germany for information about health-related topics, searching for health information on the Internet and physical activity counselling by physicians.
