Domino liver transplantation
In terms of the German Organ Transplantation Foundation:If a patient gets a donated organ because his organ has failed and if the removed organ has healthy parts (for example heart valves, parts of the liver) so they can transplant to another person. The domino transplantation is a special form of living donation and must fulfil the relevant statutory requirements.
Liver
A special metabolic dysfunction of the liver (amyloidosis) can damage various organs (heart, gastro-intestinal tract as well as peripheral nervous system). Such a patient is a candidate for a liver transplantation and can also donate his liver. The patient needs a new liver, because the dysfunction already attacked other organs and he otherwise faces death. With the liver transplantation the defect is removed. His liver (with the enzyme defect) is otherwise functionally and anatomically fine. This liver can be transferred to another human, because the expectable organ affliction via the dysfunction is not expected before 20 to 30 years later. Therefore elderly patients are candidates for such a transfer, if they are, because of the existing lack of organs, acutely facing death.
Hearth - lung
In case of lung transplantations, because of operational reasons it can be necessary to transplant the heart and lung of a person together. The removed healthy hearth of the patient can be donated to another person.Updated: 13 Jun 2013
