Persons voluntarily insured (SHI)
In terms of the Federal Ministry of Health:
Persons, who leave the compulsory insurance or whose family insurance ends, are, in principle, further insured as
voluntary members in the Statutory Health Insurance. This includes for example, persons, whose regular annual gross
remuneration in case of an increase of the remuneration (annual remuneration limit) exceeds the so-called upper income limit.
At the end of the calendar year these persons are no longer compulsorily insured in the Statutory Health Insurance.
That means, they will be exempt from insurance, if their regular annual gross remuneration exceeds the relevant upper
income limit of the current and the following calendar year.
There is the option of withdrawal, if it is declared within two weeks after notification of the health insurance about
the possibility of withdrawal and an alternative coverage in case of illness is verified.
The following persons can also join the SHI voluntarily:
- persons, who start for the first time an employment in Germany und who are exempt from insurance because of exceeding the compulsory insurance limit,
- employees, who start within two month after returning from abroad again an activity, which does not lead to compulsory insurance, as far as their membership in the SHI ended before because of employment abroad,
- disabled persons, if they, or one parent or their spouse respectively their registered partner in the last five years before the accession were statutory insured at least three years in the last five years before the accession. The statute of the health insurance can make the right to admission depending from on an age limit.
