Rent subsidies
In terms of the Rent Subsidy Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office:Rent subsidies are grants to the housing costs financed by the Federal Government and the Federal Länder, for which there is a legal claim. It is paid to tenants and owners, if the amount of their rent or the burden for acceptable accommodation overburdens the economic capacity of their household. Until the end of 2004 there was a differentiation between general rent subsidies and the special rent subsidy. The general rent subsidy is paid as rent allowance to tenants or as a subsidy to house or flat owners. The special rent subsidy ("besonderer Mietzuschuss") was a rent subsidy for recipients of social welfare and war victim welfare. Starting from 1 January 2005 they are no longer included in the recipients of rent subsidies. The acceptable housing costs of the recipients of these transfer benefits are since taken into account within the respective social welfare benefits.
